Wikibase world

Give a brief description of your project, specifically mentioning why you chose to use Wikibase.

Wikibase World is a continuation of the Wikibase Registry project, whose goal is to create a database of Wikibases. As Wikibase is used for community-built databases, it was a natural choice for keeping track of other Wikibase sites.

Describe the criteria that influenced your decision to use Wikibase.cloud or Wikibase suite (the dockers images or manual install).

The Wikibase Registry was run using the Wikibase suite and required volunteers for technical upkeep. Over time this caused the site to fall into disrepair, with basic services not working. Migrating to Wikibase.Cloud removed this need and allowed us to focus purely on content.

Did Wikibase meet your needs? Describe the challenges and successes you faced when implementing Wikibase.

We’re all big fans of Wikibase on Wikibase World, so of course we appreciate the free hosting. The biggest challenge is that moving from one wiki to another meant that we would have to assign new identifiers. Making sure that items on one Wikibase are equivalent to items on another can be a challenge if different people were involved in building the Wikibases at different points. Once this work was done, we had to publish a mapping and set up a redirect service to make sure links would not break. The biggest reason this migration to Wikibase.Cloud did not happen sooner is because someone had to actually do that work. However, we have shared my process online so that hopefully it will be easier for others.
